MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Cody Wright had seen Frontier Rodeo Company’s saddle bronc horse Let Er Rip many times over the years. The two-time world champion had never drawn the horse until March 15, however, but he had a memorable ride. Wright scored 90 points on Let Er Rip to win the event at the March 13-15 Southeastern Livestock Exposition Rodeo.

“The ride went really good,” said Wright, 36. “I was pretty nervous about that horse. I’ve watched him a lot and I’ve seen him throw a lot of guys off. I was excited to have him, and I was just hoping I could do my part because the horse really bucks, and it felt like he was bucking.”

The SLER went back to being a sanctioned PRCA rodeo this year. It also increased the committee purse for bucking stock events to $10,000 and used Frontier Rodeo Company as its stock contractor. Those changes attracted the top cowboys in the world to Montgomery as the rodeo had 55 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers in its field.

“This was awesome,” said Wright, who collected a $4,174 paycheck for his win. “The bronc riding at (Frontier Rodeo Company’s) rodeos is just outstanding from Arcadia, Fla., to Cody, Wyo., and everywhere they go. They have great horses and any time you can get one of theirs drawn, you are pretty happy.”

Wright, who won gold buckles in 2008 and 2010, and has more than $2 million in career earnings, never gets tired of winning. “It’s always awesome,” said Wright, who earned another $2,222 for winning the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo in Mercedes, Texas, this weekend. “To be able to go down the road rodeoing and make a living riding broncs, any time you win, it’s just a plus. I was trying to make the best ride I could on that horse. I would, for sure, like to get on him again. He’s been around a long time and he’s definitely a great horse.”

Wright isn’t the only person in his family to have good fortune with Let Er Rip, a horse who finished second in the PRCA Saddle Bronc of the Year balloting in 2009. Cody Wright’s brother, Jesse, rode Let Er Rip for a share of the Round 3 win at the 2012 Wrangler NFR (his world championship year), tying with his twin brother, Jake, each riding for 87 points. Cort Scheer also won Round 9 of the 2010 Wrangler NFR on Let Er Rip, with a score of 85.5 points.

The other winners at this $93,331 rodeo were bareback riders Seth Hardwick and Richmond Champion (86 points each), steer wrestler Jordan Thrasher (3.9 seconds), team ropers Ross Lowry and Stephen Britnell (5.6 seconds), tie-down ropers Houston Hutto and Tim Pharr (9.8 seconds each), bull rider Jason Beck (91 points) and barrel racer Callie DuPerier (16.25 seconds).
