PRCA Bucking Stock of the Year Announced

October 20, 2014

PRCA Bucking Stock of the Year announced
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – In 2014, there was no bareback horse better than Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Dirty Jacket.

The acclaimed 10-year-old bay gelding won the Pendleton Whisky Let’er Buck PRCA Bucking Stock of the Year honor after finishing second a year ago to Frontier Rodeo’s Full Baggage.

“I was pretty excited to get the call,” said Pete Carr, owner of Pete Carr’s Pro Rodeo. “You never know how you’re going to shape up at the end of the year. The horse had a great year and drew well all year, and had some outstanding cowboys on him. I kind of was hoping he would have a shot at finishing somewhere in the top three, so to get the top honor is just outstanding.”

Dirty Jacket finished third in the voting in 2012.

“With all the great horses in North America and Canada, to have your horse be selected No. 1 is like winning the lottery,” Carr said.

Dirty Jacket’s victory this year was even more impressive considering he was injured during the short round at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo on Feb. 22, and didn’t return to action until July 27 at the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days.

Richmond Champion proceeded to have a 91-point ride on Dirty Jacket to win the finals and the average at Cheyenne.

“He was off for almost six months,” Carr said. “I was kind of holding my breath when we bucked him at Cheyenne because you never know how they are going to come back, and it was probably one of the best trips he has ever had.”

This was the second win in three years in the bareback riding category for Carr, having won in 2012 with MGM Deuces Night.

In the saddle bronc voting, Frontier Rodeo’s Medicine Woman won for the second time; the 10-year-old horse grabbed her first win in 2011.

“This is a good deal,” said Jerry Nelson, owner of Frontier Rodeo. “She has won it before, and it is kind of nice when you win something one time, but then when you keep winning and the same horse wins it a couple of times, it’s pretty exciting. I think she (Medicine Woman) is just honest every time. She is the kind of horse guys want to get on because there is nothing dirty. She does her part and if you do your part, you can win first place.”

Medicine Woman edged two-time saddle bronc horse of the year Spring Planting (2009, tie in 2013) from Flying 5 Rodeo.

Like Dirty Jacket, Summit Pro Rodeo’s bull Cross the Line was a first-time winner. Cross the Line had a 95.83 percent buck-off rate. Growney Brothers Rodeo’s Crystal Deal was second.
